Employees of the search and rescue unit “Nalchik” of the Elbrus high-altitude search and rescue squad EMERCOM of Russia held a training session in the upper reaches of the Chegem gorge. Depending on the seasonal risks, rescuers work to respond to various emergencies. So, in the Chegem Gorge, they trained on a vertical glacier.
Frozen streams of water are the best suited for working out the methods of ascent and descent along the ice relief. Movement on the ice presents considerable difficulties: it is fragile and easily cleaves. Emergency specialists must be prepared for rescue operations in all conditions.
One of the main tasks of the staff of the Elbrus Detachment of the Russian Emergencies Ministry is to ensure the safety of tourists, to be ready to help people in need.
Only at the beginning of the year, eight search and rescue operations were conducted on the slopes of the Elbrus region. During the New Year holidays, more than 54 thousand people rested at the ski resorts in the region. At the end of 2018, specialists from the Elbrus detachment conducted more than 100 search and rescue operations in the high mountains, during which 95 people were rescued.
