WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) announcement that it plans to invest $115 million in a uranium diffusion project in Piketon. The Department of Energy announced plans to work with the Centrus Energy Corporation to produce High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU), which will support advanced nuclear reactors and create jobs.

“I’m pleased that the Department of Energy recognizes the strength of Piketon workers and the value in investing in the Piketon community,” said Brown. “This investment would help develop new enrichment technologies and improve our national security, while bringing jobs back to the area.

In September, Brown secured more than $400 million in funding for the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, which will ensure that cleanup continues as planned. Brown secured the funding in the final Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, which was signed into law in October. Brown fought to ensure that workers at Piketon receive the necessary funding to maintain workforce levels and keep cleanup on pace.

Brown has worked with U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) to keep jobs at the plant and maintain ongoing cleanup efforts in previous spending bills. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry visited the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant at the Senators’ invitation.
