Nathalie Loiseau, Minister for European Affairs, is participating today in the first meeting of the General Affairs Council in Brussels organized by the new Romanian Presidency of the Council. The work of the ministers will focus on the following points: a) Romania will present its priorities for Presidency of the Council for the first time. These, under the motto “Cohesion, a common European value”, will be broken down along four axes: i) the Europe of convergence, ii) the Europe of security, iii) Europe as a global player, iv) Europe of common values. The Romanian presidency is also taking place in a context of important institutional deadlines, including the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the organization of an informal summit in Sibiu on the future of the Union on 9 May, the organization of elections to the European Parliament and the preparation of the next institutional cycle. Nathalie Loiseau will recall our priorities for the end of the current legislative cycle as well as the importance of monitoring the rule of law in countries under the Article 7 procedure of the Treaty on European Union. B) The Romanian presidency will present in open session how it intends to continue discussions on the post-2020 European budget. Mrs Loiseau will express our support to Romania in the organization of work on the post-2020 multiannual financial framework and will recall France’s priorities: creation of own resources, immediate elimination of discounts, conditionalities, financing of new priorities, maintenance of the CAP, simplification of flexibility mechanisms.c) Ministers will discuss the fight against misinformation, following the publication by the Commission and the European External Action Service of the Action Plan against Disinformation, December 5th. It will call for the rapid progress of the work at European level, particularly in view of the European elections. The minister will recall the priority given by the government in this regard, in the context of the law of 22 December last on the fight against the manipulation of information and in the framework of the French presidency of the G7 in 2019. d) Les will discuss the communication on the European Union for citizens, following the citizens’ consultations on the future of Europe organized, on the proposal of the President of the Republic, in the Member States between April and October 2018. Minister for European Affairs will stress the importance of responding to the concerns and expectations expressed by European citizens on this occasion. It will also suggest ways to strengthen Europe’s strategic communication and make European actions more visible.
