Q: The Saudi authorities have given no indication that they would be ready for an international dimension to investigate the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and instead the prosecution will require the death penalty against five of the 11 suspects tried for the murder of the journalist. Does your call for accountability to be clear and for the perpetrators to respond to a real trial may not be heard without a stronger response from the international community?

A: The position of France is constant. We expect from the Saudi authorities a transparent, exhaustive and credible answer to the questions in the investigation into the assassination of Mr. Jamal Khashoggi. We ask that the facts be clearly established in this case of extreme gravity and that its leaders be judged and punished. This is why we are following closely the legal proceedings currently underway in Saudi Arabia. France is opposed to the death penalty in all places and in all circumstances.
