In case of particularly low temperatures, the employer must take measures for the safety and health of employees.

The provisions to be applied to avoid accidents due to extreme cold are:

the design of workstations ((adapted heating, storage of spare clothing in particular);
the appropriate organization of work (limitation of cold working time, extra breaks in particular);
the use of clothing and equipment compatible with very low temperatures.

Risks due to low temperatures should also be taken into account in the single risk assessment document (DUER).

Companies are required to follow the prevention measures of the regional directorates of companies, competition, consumption, labor and employment (Direccte). Inspections by labor inspectors can occur to ensure compliance with these rules.

The absence of heating in the premises may lead to formal notice followed by criminal penalties.
