The question: “I read an article advising consumers to favor the purchase of products marked” CE “. Can you explain to me how important it is? “
Service-public.fr response: “This marking materializes the conformity of a product with the requirements of the European Union (EU) and gives it the right to be placed on the Community market, to circulate freely and to to be used. “
Toys, electrical equipment, machinery, medical devices, lifts, personal protective equipment … CE marking (European Conformity) must be affixed to many products before they can be sold in the European Economic Area ( EEA): EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. It is valid only for products for which specifications have been adopted at EU level.
To affix this marking on its product, the manufacturer must carry out, or have carried out, inspections and tests that ensure the compliance of the product with the requirements defined in the relevant European texts. The evaluation is done at the time of the product design phase and during its manufacturing phase.
The manufacturer (or his authorized representative) established in one of the EEA countries must draw up an EC declaration of conformity. It is a document certifying that the product complies with the essential safety, health and environmental protection requirements of the regulations which concern it and by which it incurs its responsibility.
This statement usually contains:
the name and address of the manufacturer or agent;
a description of the equipment;
reference to harmonized standards or other specifications used;
identification of the signatory.
This document shall be accompanied, where appropriate, by the certificate issued by a notified body.
In addition to this statement, a manufacturer’s technical file may be required to assess the conformity of the product. It must include administrative information on the company and various documents to verify the conformity of the product with the technical rules (test report, product and manufacturing process description, plans, etc.).
To know :
National authorities are competent to penalize the absence or the false CE marking by administrative and / or penal consequences (reinstatement, contravenal fines, etc.).
