Ranking Member Deutch Statement on Sanctions against Saudi Nationals for Khashoggi’s Murder

Washington, November 15, 2018
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), Ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, issued this statement following the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s imposition of sanctions pursuant to the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act against Saudi Arabian nationals connected to the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi:

The cold-blooded murder of a journalist was a direct offense on the values for which our country stands. Today’s announced sanctions against Saudi nationals for their involvement in Khashoggi’s murder is appropriate, but should in no way mean this incident is over. We still need to get to the bottom of what truly transpired and which Saudi leaders – from junior civil servants to the highest echelons of Saudi government – were aware or orchestrated this murder. I’ll continue to push this Administration to see through the results of an independent investigation into Khashoggi’s murder and send a clear message that we will not tolerate attacks on journalists and the institution of a free press.”

Congressman Deutch penned an op-ed on October 16 titled “The World is Watching Our Response to Khashoggi’s Murder.”
