2018 UN Climate Change Conference – COP24 – Katowice (Poland) 11-15 December

Following the intense political process in negotiating the Paris Agreement at the COP21 in Paris in December 2015, the ensuing climate conferences are expected to focus on preparing and delivering on the modalities for implementing the agreement. This preparatory work started during the COP22 in Marrakesh in 2016 and continued during the Bonn summit in 2017.
A Europe that protects: Clean air for all

On 27 November, the ENVI Committee voted on above motion for resolution following a Commission’s Communication outlining measures to help Member States fight air pollution and meet their targets, and the enforcement action ensuring that the common objective of clean air for all Europeans is achieved and maintained across the EU. These measures rest on three main pillars: ambient air quality standards; national emission reduction targets; and emission standards for key sources of pollution.
Transparency and sustainability of the EU risk assessment in the food chain

On 27 November, ENVI voted on the above draft report that follows the European Citizens Initiative on glyphosate, and specifically the concerns voiced regarding the studies used in the evaluation of pesticides.
European Youth Event (EYE) – “Ideas check” with young people

On 27 November, the ENVI Committee held the follow-up exchange of views (EoV) on the EYE third edition held in Strasbourg on 1-2 June 2018 where 9.000 young European citizens between the age of 16 and 30 gathered to debate and exchange ideas with political decision makers and inspiring personalities.

It is responsible for a wide range of policy areas including waste and resource management, air and water quality and the protection of biodiversity, to name only a few. Members are dedicated to promoting a resource-efficient and sustainable Europe.

The fight against climate change is at the core of the committee’s work. It remains high on the agenda in this legislature as work is progressing on crucial proposals including the ETS review, the Effort-Sharing of greenhouse gas emission reductions between the EU Member States and land-use, land-use change and forestry. The circular economy will be another area of focus in the second half of this parliamentary term, in view of the ongoing revision of the waste legislation.
ENVI is also committed to proposing European solutions to public health and food safety issues impacting European citizens.
