Electricity Transmission System (RTE) estimates that electricity supply should be provided during the winter of 2018-2019, with however a period of vigilance from mid-January to the end of February 2019.
Consumption forecast this winter is relatively stable compared to last year but remains very dependent on temperatures. In the event of a ten-year cold wave, RTE can count on a more favorable availability than the last winters of renewable energies, particularly of hydraulics.
The availability of the nuclear fleet will be on average better than the previous year, except in the heart of winter, from mid-January to the end of February 2019, while 5 reactors will be stopped, against 3 the year last.
RTE also recalls that, in case of need, especially if the temperatures become extremely cold or that means of production stop in a fortuitous way, it is possible to take exceptional measures which go from the reduction of tension on the network, the call for citizen energy saving gestures, through the use of electrical interruptions in large industrial consumers selected by call for tenders. As a last resort, load shedding (localized and rotating power cuts) could be organized.

The French electricity system will be balanced but without margins until 2020, due to the closure of some of the heat production means in recent years.
After the winter of 2020, safety margins should reappear. They would allow the progressive closure of the 5 coal-fired production units located on the sites of Cordemais (Loire Atlantique), Le Havre (Seine-Maritime), Gardanne (Bouches-du-Rhône) and Saint-Avold (Moselle) as well as the closure of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant (Haut-Rhin), on the condition, in particular, to control electricity consumption, to significantly increase the development of renewable energies, to make reliable and increase erasures (capacity of customers who have signed contracts specific to reduce their consumption in case of peak consumption).
