19 October 2018: The Global Water Partnership (GWP), with the Government of El Salvador, organized a two-day workshop for Central American countries to share their actions and support each other’s efforts towards achieving SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation). Countries presented their experiences of incorporating the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into national planning mechanisms and of developing integrated monitoring approaches for SDG 6.

During the workshop, UN-Water and several other UN entities described existing baselines and the instruments available for conducting integrated monitoring.

GWP and its partners convened the regional workshop in response to the launch of the UN-Water report, which previously warned of lack of progress on SDG 6 around the world. GWP Central America, the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD), the Central American and Dominican Republic Forum on Water and Sanitation (FOCARD-APS) and the Government of El Salvador cooperated to organize the regional workshop. Participants were government officials from water-related ministries of Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

GWP co-organized the workshop through its Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) Support programme, the aim of which is to support country and regional responses to SDG target 6.5 on IWRM. [GWP Press Release] [GWP Web Page on IWRM Programe]
