The change of name of a municipality is decided by decree, at the request of the municipal council and after consultation of the general council. It is a commission of revision of the name of the communes, reunited by the Minister of the Interior and composed of experts of different organizations and administrations, which examines the files of the communes.

2 criteria are required:

avoid a serious risk of homonymy with one or more other communities;
restore a historic denomination that has fallen into disuse.

The changes are most often aimed at singling out common names with names that are too similar (many are those starting with Saint or Saint, for example).

To know :

Requests for modification based on purely tourist or economic considerations are rejected. Unlike individuals who may ask to change their name if they feel penalized daily by their surname, a derogatory common name can not be changed.
