Source: Federal Foreign OfficeThe negotiators of the European Union and the United Kingdom yesterday reached an interim agreement in the Brexit negotiations. This is an important step. We now finally have a signal from Britain how the exit could be organized. And that is extremely important. But we have only – as we see today – gone part of the way to an orderly exit. There is still much to be done for both sides. It is clear that talks in the UK will not be easy. This is not surprising given the scope of the decision and the discussions that have taken place in the GBR. But now we hope that all sides will take their responsibilities and think through the consequences of the decisions that are to come. Ultimately, it’s about much. The negotiations that have taken place and the results of these negotiations have certainly demanded something from both sides. We have come together. We will now, together with the other Member States of the EU, look carefully at the text submitted and decide on it in the European Council. I hope, of course, that the British side will also examine the text seriously and carefully. Above all, the opportunities offered by this text. Of course, even if Brexit is going to happen, we want to have the closest possible relationships with our British friends in the future. For this, as we find, the present text provides a good basis. All this presupposes, however, that it comes to an orderly exit. An unregulated exit would have serious consequences for all sides. And as far as it should not come.
