The incident occurred at the busy intersection of the Khrustalev and Promyshlennaya streets. The 53-year-old driver of the Mercedes Sprinter bus suddenly felt ill at the wheel, and he felt that he was losing consciousness.
At that moment, the inspector of a Detached Company of the Road Patrol Service of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the MIA of Russia Administration for Sevastopol, police Senior Lieutenant Boris Kopin, was crossing the road nearby. The attention of the policeman was attracted by the driver, who gesticulated with his hands, and then bent down on the driver’s seat. The bus drove onto the oncoming lane and headed for the intersection. The inspector realized that the driver most likely had lost consciousness, and the vehicle was uncontrolled. There was no time to lose – a sudden appearance at a busy intersection would inevitably lead to a tragedy.
Having caught up with the bus, the policeman on the run opened the driver’s door, twisted the steering wheel, pressed the brake pedal and stopped the vehicle. Convinced that nothing more was threatening the road users, Senior Police Lieutenant Boris Kopin rendered first aid to the driver, and the traffic inspectors who arrived promptly called for an ambulance brigade and reported the traffic incident to the duty unit.
When the bus driver got better, he thanked the police officer, who had prevented the traffic accident and a possible tragedy.
