U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) applauded the University of Illinois-Willard Airport (CMI) after it announced today that American Airlines will add new direct service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport starting in December. According to CMI, this is the first new hub available to the region in more than ten years.

“Adding this new route is testament to Champaign-Urbana’s strong economy and will provide even more opportunities for residents throughout Central Illinois,” said Davis. “I applaud Gene Cossey and his team at Willard Airport for all their hard work in securing this additional route. Willard is a great example of how important regional airports are to our rural communities and why we must protect and improve federal programs critical to ensuring rural residents have access to air service.”

“The new route to Charlotte from Champaign-Urbana will provide a very positive economic impact to the region and will make traveling even more convenient and easy for our passengers,”says Willard Airport Executive Director Gene Cossey. “The Fly Champaign-Urbana team credits this new route to the great support and dedication of our local community and our local, state, and national leaders who are always striving for improving our region.”

Davis fought to strengthen programs essential to smaller airports in the recent reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). H.R. 4, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act, passed by a bipartisan vote of 393-13 in April. The bill awaits Senate action before it can be signed into law.
