Afzal Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister, responding to the news that a father was unlawfully separated from his child and falsely imprisoned for three months by the Home Office, said:
“Theresa May condemned Trump’s family separation policy, but her hostile environment separates parents from their children every day.
“This case is an appalling injustice, caused by a litany of Home Office failures at every stage of the process, but it is not a one off.
“This Government has no respect for the right to family life. The Home Office repeatedly breaches its own policies, and it is unaccountable to politicians or the public.
“After the Windrush crisis, the Government has not learned any substantive lessons about their cruel and ineffective immigration system.”
