Today, SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty and member of the Loneliness Taskforce, attended the launch of a new report by the Loneliness Taskforce ‘A Connected Island: An Ireland free from loneliness.’ Following the launch, Mr McNulty said that we all have a responsibility to alleviate loneliness.
“More and more we are hearing of people who are experiencing and struggling with loneliness. This can have a profound impact on people’s mental and physical health and can be a difficult cycle to break free from.
“While loneliness might be more prevalent in older people, it is not age specific or location specific. We, as a society, can begin to tackle loneliness by starting conversations with those around us and ensuring inclusivity. Loneliness should never be an inevitability. We all have a part to play and we all have a responsibility to help alleviate loneliness. It is essential that we encourage people to talk openly and freely about how they are feeling.
“This is why the Loneliness Taskforce is seeking to increase awareness of the loneliness epidemic that we are facing, right across this island. The report published today seeks to bring some of the issues to the fore and it is my hope that it will go some way in helping anyone who is struggling with isolation or loneliness.”
