SDLP Cllr Heading has called for criminal investigations into Dunmurry Manor Care home after an investigation carried out by the Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland brought to light horrendous incidents of abuse and negligence of some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

Cllr Heading said:

“To hear this morning that residents, many whom are living with dementia, experienced horrific human rights abuses is absolutely horrific and heart breaking in equal measure.

“It is disgraceful that Runwood Home Ltd have accumulated £2 million in public funds from the Health and Social Care Trusts, pensions of residents and families of patients, only to have been neglected and treated inhumanly in a place that should have been intently caring for them in the last years of their lives.

“No time can be wasted. It is imperative that comprehensive criminal investigations are initiated and anyone who was involved is brought to justice. We must question whether corporate manslaughter has taken place.

“Along with the SDLP Policing and Justice Spokesperson, Dolores Kelly MLA, I will be seeking a meeting with the Chief Constable and demanding that any criminal investigations to date are reviewed immediately, and that charges are brought towards anyone found to be complicit in the suffering and mistreatment of these elderly residents.

“RQIA, statutory bodies and agencies must be held to account for their absent duty of candour, and those who turned a blind eye be deemed every bit as guilty.

“It is pivotal that new safeguarding legislation, which has been called for by the Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland, be at the top of any forthcoming Executive agenda upon return of the institutions to ensure that we never, ever have a repeat of these types of incidents again.

“My thoughts are with residents and their loved ones that have been affected by this in anyway, and I congratulate these families who have seen this fight through to the end – their struggle for justice will ultimately save lives.”
