The Plasencia Municipal Council has recently announced the commencement of work on the erection of a flagpole over 25 meters high, at a cost of over EUR 16 000, using funding allocated under the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (ISUDS). In fact, these funds are intended to improve public access to information and communication technologies, promote an economic model based on sustainability and respect for the environment and foster social inclusion and poverty reduction. These are particularly important objectives in a region threatened by depopulation and afflicted by poverty rates above the European average.
1. Does the Commission consider that, in a municipality such as Plasencia, with 21% unemployment, the use of these funds to put up a flagpole can be justified?
2. Does the Commission believe this project to be in line with ISUDS funding objectives?
3. Will the Commission accordingly contact the authorities to ensure that ISUDS funds are used in compliance with established objectives in Extremadura and elsewhere in Spain?
