14th June 2018 The Tonga Green Climate Fund Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme (GCF-RPSP) Management Unit under the Department of Climate Change, (MEIDECC) continue its consultation with District and Town Officers of Ha’apai Islands.
The purpose of the whole day consultation is to raise awareness of the Fund and strengthen the capacities of district and town officers of Ha’apai Island to access the Fund. The training took place at the Red Cross Evacuation Hall in Pangai, Ha’apai with the opening remarks delivered by the Officer in Charge of the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) for Ha’apai Islands, Mrs. Lu’isa Uai Taunga, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by the Principal Climate Finance Analyst from the Department of Change, Mr. Sione Talolakepa Fulivai.
Dr. Netatua Pelesikoti Taufatofua commenced the consultation with an introduction to the GCF and its objectives, roles of the National Designated Authority (N.D.A) and the No-Objection Procedure. The second part of the training focused on an introduction pertaining to the objectives, sub-objectives and key activities of Joint National Action Plan (JNAP II) that was approved by the Tonga Cabinet in May 28th 2018.
The presence of the JNAP Taskforce played a pivotal part in the discussion of the JNAP II objectives, sub-objectives and key activities of JNAP II with representatives present at the training. The opportunities given to District and Town Officers to engage in the group discussions will assist the Department of Climate Change when developing a National Country Programme to submit to the GCF.
The training was a success and the District officers and Town Officers is hoping to work in closer collaboration with the GCF-RPSP Unit and the Department of Climate Change to develop a proposal to assist Ha’apai to coping with the negative impacts causes by climate change and disaster.
