Source: BMW Group Munich. Experts from the BMW Group Additive Manufacturing Center and from BMW Motorrad have teamed up with the motorcycles of the Int. Individualized GS Trophy 2018. Thanks to “Generative Design”, ie the design by means of an algorithm, it was possible to customize the radiator covers of the 114 BMW R 1200 GS Rally Motorcycles: The CAD data of the radiator cover has virtually complemented the team with the names and starting numbers of the drivers and subsequently printed by means of additive manufacturing.

In selective laser melting, aluminum powder is melted by powerful lasers. Since no tool is required for 3D printing, each individual part can be different. The process is therefore ideal for individualizing individual parts. At the same time, the finished components offer very high strength and were therefore perfect for the harsh conditions of the Int. GS Trophy, which took place from 3 to 10 June 2018 2018 in Mongolia. The 3D printed radiator panels were additionally machined by a milling process for greater contrast and surface quality.

As a reminder of the 2,350 km long journey, the individualized panels were handed over to the participants at the award ceremony.
