Headline: Information Portal Website “Open for Professionals” Starts for Highly-skilled Foreign Professionals

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has started an information portal website called “Open for Professionals,” aiming to enhance public-relations campaigns for attracting the attention of highly-skilled professionals to Japan.

In cooperation with related organizations, METI provides on the website information that highly-skilled foreign professionals already working in Japan or intending to seek employment in Japan may need, e.g., living environments and immigration policies of Japan. METI will update the website as needed to improve the provided information.

1. Background

To resolve various social challenges by incorporating the innovations of the fourth industrial revolution into every industrial and social life, it is indispensable for Japan to proactively accept overseas people who have highly-advanced expert knowledge and skills (hereinafter referred to as “highly-skilled foreign professionals”). The “Growth Strategy 2017,” approved by the Cabinet on June 9, 2017, makes a proposal that Japan should continue to further attract such professionals.

2. Outline of the website

In cooperation with related organizations, METI provides on the website reader-friendly information that highly-skilled foreign professionals already working in Japan or intending to seek employment in Japan may need, such as information on living environments in Japan, e.g., Japanese learning, education for children, employment, housing and medical care, as well as information on preferential immigration treatments for such professionals.

3. Future actions

To further attract such professionals to Japan, METI will strive to proactively engage in public-relations campaigns inside and outside Japan, in collaboration with overseas embassies, JETRO and other related organizations.
