AMERICA/EL SALVADOR – CELAM Assembly: “We asked Mgr. Romero for his intercession”
San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) – “The Central American Bishops have been meeting for 75 years to analyze social, economic and political situations, and above all to share the aspects of their ministry. Together we faced our problems”. This is what His Exc. Mgr. Jorge Solórzano, Bishop of Granada, Secretary General of the Nicaraguan Bishops’ Conference, said during the concluding press conference of the XXXVI Assembly of the Latin American Episcopate (CELAM), held from 9 to 12 May in El Salvador (see Fides 8/05/2017) Regarding Mgr. Romero, the Bishop noted that “our Blessed was part of SEDAC and CELAM; we asked Mgr. Romero for his intercession to continue working with our Central American peoples”.
The Secretary General of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, His Exc. Mgr. Alfonso Gerardo Miranda, Bishop of Monterrey, recalled the message of 9 May of the Apostolic Nuncio in El Salvador, Archbishop Leon Kalenga who said that he intended to promote the proclamation of Mgr. Romero to Doctor of the Universal Church: “Romero has shown us the path a Christian must follow, be what he believes, what he lives, what he professes”.
Tracing a summary of the Assembly’s work, His Exc. Mgr. Juan Espinoza, Auxiliary Bishop of Morelia, Mexico, Secretary General of Celam, pointed out that the first days were dedicated to the analysis, discussion and approval of the relations on the work carried out in these two years by the seven pastoral departments of Celam. He then underlined two significant moments of communion with the people of God in the parish of the Immaculate Conception and then in the Cathedral, for a special day: the meeting with Bishops from Canada and the United States to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Synod and to concentrate on this occasion on the phenomenon of migration, to better accompany our migrant brothers.
Father Francisco Niño, Celam’s Secretary-General, said that “the experience of the Catholic Church is of communion. Celam seeks to create a space for communion so that the Bishops can discern what God is asking them in the various pilgrim communities in these Latin American and Caribbean lands”.
